How to send signature requests via email and SMS?
BoldSign allows you to send signature requests and document notifications through both email and SMS, offering a fast and convenient option for recipients when you are unsure of their preferred delivery method. A secure signing link is sent to the recipient’s email address and mobile number, allowing them to review and sign the document directly from their device.
Requirements to use email and SMS delivery
To make use of the email and SMS delivery feature, the following requirements must be met:
- You need to have an active subscription to a paid BoldSign account - Business or higher-tier plans.
- You are required to obtain the SMS add-on, incurring a fee of $0.20 for each SMS sent.
Sending signature request via email and SMS
Follow the steps below to set the email delivery mode for signers:
- Click the
Create New
button at the top of the screen and choose theCreate New Document
option.
- On the Prepare Document page, open the
Delivery Options
dropdown. By default, the delivery mode is set toEmail
. - Select the
Email & SMS
option.
- When selecting
Email & SMS
, the sender is required to enter the recipient’s name, email address, and phone number. To enter the phone number, the sender must select the correct country code and input the recipient’s number in the designated field.
- You can also allow your signers to receive signature request notifications in their preferred language. For example, if the signer’s language is set to German in the Language dropdown, the notifications will be sent in German via SMS and email.
- Complete the document preparation as usual and proceed to send it for signature.
- Once sent, the signer(s) will receive both an email and an SMS notification.
- For the email notification, open the email and click
Review and Sign
to access the document.
- For the SMS notification, open the SMS and tap the secure link to access the document for signing.
SMS notifications
SMS notifications are sent for specific events including:
- Signature request
- Manual reminders
- Signature completion notifications
- Document deletion warnings
- Document expiration warnings
Limitations for email + SMS delivery
- SMS notifications are sent only to the signers and not to CC recipients.
- Signers cannot reassign the document when the delivery method is Email + SMS.
- Signers who have SMS delivery mode will not receive automatic reminders.
- Group signers are not supported in Email + SMS delivery modes.
- The SMS notification text is controlled by the BoldSign SMS service and cannot be customized.
If you have set a budget limit for SMS notifications in your subscription preferences and it is exceeded, notifications will still be sent for documents created before the limit was reached. Any remaining credits will be adjusted in the subsequent billing cycle.
