What is the difference between the roles of a reviewer and a CC?

When sending documents in BoldSign, different people may need to be involved in different ways. Some may need to approve the document before it gets signed, while others may simply need to receive a copy once everything is complete.

To manage this, BoldSign provides two helpful roles:

  • Reviewer
  • CC (Carbon Copy)

Understanding the difference between these two roles will help you create a smooth and efficient document workflow.

What is a reviewer in BoldSign?

  • A Reviewer is someone who is required to review and approve the document before it is sent to the signers. They are part of the document process but do not sign the document.
  • Using the Signing Order feature in BoldSign, you can set the reviewer to be the first in line. This means the document will be sent to the reviewer before anyone else, giving them the chance to check everything and approve it. Only after their approval will the document move forward to the actual signers.
  • If the reviewer rejects the document, the process will stop immediately, and no one else will receive it until the issue is resolved.

What is a CC (carbon copy) in BoldSign?

  • A CC, or Carbon Copy recipient, is someone who is not involved in the document process at all but will receive a copy of the final signed document once everything is complete.
  • They do not review, approve, or sign the document. They are simply notified once the signing process is done and automatically receive a copy of the signed file.
  • This role is ideal for keeping people informed—such as assistants, admins, team members, or clients—without requiring them to take any action.

When should you use reviewer vs. CC?

Use the Reviewer role when;

  1. Someone needs to check and approve the document before signing starts
  2. You want to prevent errors or unauthorized documents from being sent
  3. You want more control using the Signing Order, ensuring the reviewer sees it first

Use the CC role when;

  1. Someone only needs the final signed copy
  2. They don’t need to approve, review, or sign anything
  3. You want to keep others informed without involving them

Choosing the right role for the right person

The Reviewer and CC roles in BoldSign help you build more secure and flexible workflows. Reviewers add a layer of control, making sure that documents are approved before reaching signers. With signing order, you can place reviewers at the start of the process to maintain structure and accountability.

On the other hand, CC recipients are great for keeping others in the loop—without requiring their input.

By using both roles wisely, you’ll ensure your document flow is clear, compliant, and smooth from start to finish.
