Why eIDAS validator shows a warning after QES signing with BoldSign?

Published:
1 min read

BoldSign supports Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES) through Evrotrust, a provider listed in the official EU Trusted List (EUTL). This ensures your documents are fully eIDAS-compliant and legally admissible in court in the event of a dispute.

What the Validator Shows

When you upload a QES-signed document from BoldSign to the EU DSS Validator:

  • You will see a valid QES issued by Evrotrust — confirming legal compliance.
  • You may also see a warning or untrusted notice for the final seal added by BoldSign.

Example output

  • Evrotrust Certificate Report: Indicates a valid QES, compliant with eIDAS requirements.

  • BoldSign Certificate Report: Shows an untrusted status for the BoldSign seal, which is expected behavior (explained below).

Why BoldSign adds an additional seal

After the QES is applied:

  • BoldSign certifies the document using an Adobe-trusted Entrust certificate (AATL).
  • This seal prevents further modifications and ensures long-term document validity.
  • Since the Entrust certificate is not listed in the EU Trusted List (EUTL), the DSS validator may flag it as untrusted. This does not affect the legal validity of the QES.

Summary

  • Documents signed via BoldSign with QES from Evrotrust are legally valid under eIDAS and admissible in court.
  • The additional BoldSign seal ensures document integrity and Adobe compatibility.
  • A warning in the DSS validator about the final seal is normal and does not affect the validity of the QES.
