How to sign a document with KBA authentication?

Published:

When knowledge-based authentication (KBA) is enabled for a signer, the signer must verify their identity before accessing and signing the document. KBA asks the signer to provide legal identity information and answer security questions based on public record information.

If you receive a document that requires KBA, complete the verification first. After successful verification, BoldSign redirects you to the document so you can review and sign it.

To sign a document with KBA authentication, follow these steps:

  1. Open the signing request

Open the signature request email and click Review and Sign. You will be directed to the KBA authentication page before the document opens.

  2. Start KBA authentication

Review the KBA verification instructions. Select the consent checkbox to agree to the KBA verification process, then click Begin verification.

If you try to continue without selecting the consent checkbox, BoldSign prompts you to agree before proceeding.

Common cases include:
  • Session expired: If the KBA session expires before you submit your answers, restart verification if attempts are still available.
  • Verification failed: If your answers cannot be verified, you can try again while retry attempts are still available.
  • Maximum attempts reached: If the allowed number of attempts is reached, access to the document is restricted. Contact the sender for assistance.

The sender can reset KBA authentication to let you try again or remove authentication if KBA is no longer required.

The number of allowed KBA attempts is configured by the sender.
