How to register a Passkey in BoldSign?

Published:

Passkeys provide a secure and phishing-resistant way to sign in to your BoldSign account without entering a password. Depending on your device and browser, you can create a passkey using Windows Hello, Touch ID, Face ID, a device PIN, a physical security key (such as a YubiKey), or a mobile device.

Before you begin

Before registering a passkey, ensure that:

  • You are signed in to your BoldSign account.
  • Your device, operating system, and browser support WebAuthn and passkeys.
  • A screen lock, device PIN, fingerprint, facial recognition method, or security key is configured on your device.

Steps to register a passkey

  1. Sign in to your BoldSign account.
  2. In the left navigation panel, click Settings and select My Profile.
  3. Scroll down to the Passkeys section.
  4. Click Add passkey.

Add Passkey

  • If Two-Factor Authentication (TFA) is enabled: Complete verification using your configured method (Authenticator App, SMS OTP, or Recovery Email).
  • If TFA is not enabled: Enter the verification code sent to your BoldSign account email address.
  1. After verification, a passkey prompt appears from your browser or operating system.

Prompt

  1. Choose your preferred passkey storage method (e.g., Windows Hello, Touch ID, Face ID, Security key, or Mobile device).

Preferred passkey storage

  1. Follow the on-screen instructions on your device to create the passkey.
  2. In the Passkey name dialog, review the default name (automatically generated as < Browser > on < OS >).
  3. (Optional) Enter a custom name to help identify the device or key:
    • Supported characters: Letters, numbers, spaces, periods (.), underscores (_), hyphens (-), and apostrophes (').
    • The name must be unique among your registered passkeys.
  4. Click Save.

Save

Result: The passkey is registered to your BoldSign account and can be used for future sign-ins and passkey-based authentication.

The appearance of the passkey prompt and the available authentication options depend on your browser, operating system, and device configuration.

How to rename an existing passkey?

You can rename a passkey at any time without completing identity verification.

  1. Navigate to Settings > My Profile.
  2. Go to the Passkeys section.
  3. Click the Edit (pencil) icon next to the passkey you want to rename.

Edit

  1. Enter the new name and click Save.

Save

Renaming a passkey changes only its display name in BoldSign. It does not modify the credential stored on your device, browser, security key, or password manager.
