How can I create and send documents without templates?

Published:

BoldSign supports both template-based and dynamic document workflows. If you do not want to maintain pre-created templates, you can use the Embedded Request API to allow users to upload documents, add recipients, configure fields, and send signature requests directly from your application.

This approach provides a document preparation experience within your application while using BoldSign to manage the signing process.

When should I use this approach?

This solution is useful when you want to:

  • Create signature requests without pre-created templates.
  • Allow users to upload their own documents.
  • Let users configure recipients and signing fields dynamically.
  • Embed the document preparation and sending experience within your application.
  • Manage signature workflows through the BoldSign API.

How does it work?

To create and send documents without templates, use the Create Embedded Request URL API and set the SendViewOption parameter to FillingPage.

The workflow is as follows:

  1. Call the Create Embedded Request URL API.
  2. Set SendViewOption to FillingPage.
  3. Retrieve the embedded URL returned by the API.
  4. Open the embedded URL within your application.
  5. Allow users to upload documents, add recipients, place fields, and send signature requests.

Once the embedded page is loaded, users can complete the entire document preparation process without leaving your application.

Example API request

curl -X POST \
 'https://api.boldsign.com/v1/document/createEmbeddedRequestUrl' \
 -H 'accept: application/json' \
 -H 'X-API-KEY: {Your API Key}' \
 -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
 -d '{
       "Title": "Sent from API Curl",
       "ShowToolbar": true,
       "ShowNavigationButtons": true,
       "ShowPreviewButton": true,
       "ShowSendButton": true,
       "ShowSaveButton": true,
       "SendViewOption": "FillingPage",
       "ShowTooltip": false,
       "Locale": "EN",
       "Message": "This is document message sent from API Curl",
       "EnableSigningOrder": false
     }'

What can users do in the embedded request page?

When using the embedded request page, users can:

  • Upload documents.
  • Add recipients.
  • Configure signing roles.
  • Place signature and other form fields.
  • Preview the document.
  • Send signature requests.
  • Pre-created templates are not required when using this approach.
  • Users prepare documents directly within the embedded experience.
  • The embedded request page can be integrated into web applications and custom workflows.
  • If your workflow requires fully automated document creation and sending without user interaction, additional API implementation may be required.
